Let’s Talk About Depression, Mindfulness and Self-Care
On Tuesday, January 28th, Toronto Rehab Foundation was thrilled to host an important Wellness Webinar as part of The Blakely Health Innovation Series. “Let’s Talk About Depression, Mindfulness & Self-Care” taught us strategies to support our mental health, well-being and resiliency.

Toronto Rehab Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Martha McKay (in photo, second from right), began the webinar with an informative overview of depression. As part of her practice, Dr. McKay leads Let’s Connect in the Spinal Cord Rehabilitation program at Lyndhurst Centre. With a focus on coping strategies that are based in cognitive behavioural therapy, Let’s Connect patient sessions cover a range of topics, from pain, to relationships, to self-compassion. As part of the sessions, participants acquire practical strategies that they can incorporate in their day such as learning to breathe in for a count of three and out for a count of six, which can activate the parasympathetic nervous system and lower your heart rate.

Funding to establish the Let’s Connect program has been generously provided by the Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund. With further donor support, the Let’s Connect team hopes to explore virtual intervention as an alternative delivery method, to help increase accessibility and expand reach beyond the Greater Toronto Area.

The Wellness Webinar continued with guest speaker, Psychotherapist Angie Kingma (in photo, far right), explaining mindfulness practice and its many psychological, interpersonal and physical benefits.

Occupational Therapist Jaisa Sulit (in photo, second from left) then talked about how a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program enriched her recovery from a spinal cord injury; helping her to cope with chronic pain, stress, anxiety and depression. Jaisa led webinar participants through a mindfulness practice that is captured in the recording for you to try.
