Chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease and cancer are the cause of one death every five minutes. With donors as our partners, Toronto Rehab is able to respond to our society’s growing burden of chronic disease with important innovations in rehabilitation and preventative medicine.

Toronto Rehab is proud to celebrate a unique partnership with Medavie to advance wellness through its support of ACCELERATION 2.0. An e-health solution that will provide the necessary health information and support for at-risk Canadians to take control of their health and reduce their risk of developing chronic disease, ACCELERATION 2.0 will include online coaching and tailored exercise plans.

ACCELERATION 2.0 is founded on the pan-Canadian clinical research study that addressed health behaviours known to contribute to 70% of all chronic diseases: physical inactivity, smoking, inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables, and alcohol in excess.

Led by Toronto Rehab’s Dr. Paul Oh, Medical Director, Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Program, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute / UHN and a leading expert on the role of exercise in rehabilitation, the four-year $750,000 initiative builds on the initial $75,000 investment provided by Medavie Blue Cross in support of the 2013-2016 ACCELERATION chronic disease and lifestyle research study. Through this study, we have found that by targeting at-risk Canadians, we are helping them achieve better health while extending their life expectancy by 1.25 years. The extra 1.25 years is well spent by spending time with family, friends and loved ones.

Partners such as Medavie enable Toronto Rehab to harness the unique talents of our scientists, clinicians and educators to create programs such as ACCELERATION 2.0 that empower people with the motivation and tools to live better.

“Thank you Medavie for your leadership gift that will further realize our vision of helping Canadians make the healthy choice, everyday,” says Dr. Oh.

“Chronic disease management presents significant challenges to the healthcare system and to those living with a chronic illness,” adds Bernard Lord, CEO, Medavie. “Working with Toronto Rehab, we’re able to support an innovative, evidenced-based program that is helping people achieve their health and wellness goals, with a goal of chronic disease prevention, and live their best lives.”

Medavie is a health organization that integrates benefits management, health management and health care delivery. Together, with more than 6,000 employees, they are committed to providing innovative solutions that improve the wellbeing of Canadians.
