Artificial intelligence, cognitive robots, big data, oh my! These are just a few of the topics discussed today at The Future of the Home; the latest installment of Toronto Rehab Foundation’s Health Innovation Lecture series.

Dr. Alex Mihailidis, Senior Scientist at Toronto Rehab and the Barbara G. Stymiest Chair in Rehabilitation Technology, provided an in-depth look at the many technologies Toronto Rehab is creating for the home. The goal is to keep aging Canadians safe in their homes, whatever their homes may be; whether it is a condo, a three-story house or a nursing home. Dr. Mihailidis and his team are using artificial intelligence, big data and robotics to develop at-home health technologies to enable independence and prevent injury.

Ted Maulucci, Chief Information Officer, Tridel Corporation, presented his vision for the future of ‘smart’ residential buildings: Next Generation Communities. Ted emphasized the importance of designing buildings that run on one network so that technologies, communications and analytics work in tandem to provide a better living experience.

Trish Barbato, Senior Vice President, Innovation & Strategic Partnerships, Revera Inc. presented her vision for innovative senior homes and long-term care across Canada. Trish emphasized the urgency for organizations to become responsive to change in order to be innovative and change the way consumers experience products and services. This of course begins with engagement!

Dr. Alex Mihailidis
Senior Scientist, Toronto Rehab
Barbara G. Stymiest Chair in Rehabilitation Technology

Dr. Mihailidis has been conducting research in the field of intelligent systems in health for the past 15 years, with a specific focus on the development of intelligent homes for elder care.  He is also the Scientific Director of the AGE-WELL Network of Centres of Excellence, which focuses on the development of new technologies and services for older adults.

Dr. Mihailidis is very active in the rehabilitation engineering profession, currently as the Immediate Past-President for RESNA (Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America).  He was also named a Fellow of RESNA in 2014, which is one of the highest honours within this field of research and practice.

Ted Maulucci
Chief Information Officer, Tridel Corporation

Mr. Maulucci has been with the Tridel Group of Companies for over twenty years, leading the information technology group for the last fifteen. He is passionate about contribution and advancing innovation across Canada through partnerships and collaboration.

Mr. Maulucci has been recognized with several international and local awards for IT leadership, IT application development for the real estate industry, smart buildings, and innovation. Some notable awards are the “Top Ten Best in Class CIO’s in North America” by Computerworld, CIPA Gold Award of Excellence for application development in the real estate industry, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for promoting Canadian innovation, and the Mid-Career Award from the University of Toronto for industry and social contribution in an engineering career.

Trish Barbato
Senior Vice President, Innovation & Strategic Partnerships, Revera Inc.

Ms. Barbato is responsible for driving a culture of innovation across Revera and for establishing Revera’s global presence as a preeminent, industry-leading senior’s innovation partner and investor. She has also held the roles of SVP, Retirement and SVP, Home Health within Revera. Previously, she was President and CEO of COTA Health, a leading therapy and mental health services organization, Vice President, Corporate Services and CFO of Providence Healthcare and Managing Director of Bayshore Healthcare.

Ms. Barbato is a Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants Association, author of Inspire Your Career and a frequent speaker. Ms. Barbato is a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award and a Big Sister with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.
