Advancing Alzheimer’s Care

January is Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month.  Alzheimer's disease, or related dementias, affect an estimated 500,000 Canadians, and statistics predict that this number will double within a generation.

Specializing in treating persons aged 65 and older who have behavioural challenges related to dementia, Toronto Rehab’s Geriatric Psychiatry Service provides strategies to help individuals with dementia cope with the deterioration of memory and thinking skills in an effort to maximize their quality of life.

Toronto Rehab’s internationally-renowned research program is supporting advancements in Alzheimer’s and dementia care.  For example, iDAPT Communication Team Scientist Dr. Frank Rudzicz (in photo) uses artificial intelligence to understand speech problems.  He is developing software to assess and help treat speech problems unique to those with Alzheimer's disease and other neurological illnesses. His software can be played on a computer, tablet or in a robot designed to interact with people.
